WHAT IS THE COURSE ABOUT?

Introduction
The performance of a building depends on the continued integrity of the building fabric, the contribution of its environmental services and the protection of the building from those agents which can cause its deterioration and subsequent failure. Students will study the conditions which affect the performance of a building, the technologies used to provide and maintain a suitable environment and the strategies for
management of these highly technical elements from construction stage and through their in-service life.

What is an Architectural Technologist?
An Architectural Technologist is a person who has a specialized knowledge in the area of architectural detailing and drawing (both manual and computer aided) in accordance with best building practice and current legislation.

WHAT WILL I BE ABLE TO DO WHEN I FINISH THE COURSE?

On completion of the course the student should be able:
• to assist in developing the Architect’s sketch design into working drawings
• to produce appropriate drawings and contract documentation both manual and computer aided
• to understand issues of sustainability in building and development
• to operate under the direction of a qualified Architect as a member of the Design Team

WHAT FOLLOW-ON STUDY OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE?

Graduates of the course may apply to proceed to an Honours Degree in Architectural Technology or Architecture at other Institutes of Technology or Universities. Graduates of Higher Certificates: Graduates of a relevant Higher Certificate are eligible to progress into this course at year 3.

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

(A) Leaving Certificate: Five subjects required, to include English or Irish at Ordinary Level grade D or better and Mathematics at Ordinary Level grade D or better. Mature applicants will be interviewed and assessed on an individual basis.
(B) Graduates of Higher Certificates: Graduates of a relevant
Higher Certificate are eligible to progress into this course at year 3.
